THE FRAME

KUBE is a specially designed 3x3m cube, three surfaces are clad in a semi-transparent screen, each mapped to video projectors. With a projector to cover each side, surfaces of content creates a transparent / non- transparent interplay.
KUBE is an ideal spectacle for both stage- and open space purposes, and can furthermore be put on wheels so it can be rotated after each act.
The visualization is done by OBSCURA aka. Frederik Hilmer who establishes different themes for the different electronic artists in each of their own sets.

THE CONCEPT

With focus on the intimacy that occurs when artist and audience share a space, the KUBE installation expands the framework by which we usually experience electronic music and abstract sound art in a live context.

A modernized campfire experience. spectators are invited into the workspace of the 4 musicians, while they themselves become active players in an illusory space created by the designed light scenography.

The vision to create an intimate space where the distance between artist and audience is so small that it almost becomes intimidating was born out of a shared frustration over the widening gap between audience and performer, which in recent years has affected especially the electronic music scene, but can overall be interpreted as the commercial music industry’s need to constantly create new revenue by designing larger and wilder concerts.

The intimacy that KUBE facilitates will on one hand make the viewer aware of the fact that the music is actually being performed live, but will also confront the viewer with himself and how he or she usually experiences a concert.

Instead of being a passive spectator who experience the concert as a movie, fixed in one place, the KUBE installation invites the viewer to move around in space, creating a feeling of being part of the installation.

THE SOUND

The four performing sound artists have quite different expressions ranging from Smerz’s underwater R’n’B, Mikkel Meyer’s melodic DIY electro, Rumpistol’s nostalgic and genre crossing universe to Bjørn Svin’s eccentric and highly energetic techno.
All 4 have a very a playful approach to sound, a deeply rooted melancholy and a rhythmic sophistication.

For ten years Copenhagen’s RUMPISTOL has delivered his unique genre crossing music to the world, gaining acknowledgement from everyone from John Peel to Laurent Garnier, releasing on Project Mooncircle and playing live at Boiler Room and MUTEK Montreal. His 5th album “Away” deals with absence and presence. Both physically to be isolated from something and psychologically to be completely lost in something.

DIY synth freak MIKKEL MEYER presents folk inspired acid-electro combined with a low-key use of vocals as heard on his 2014 release “Jolly”. Meyers combination of playfulness with the intelligent use of old equipment has gained attention from various critics and fellow electronic musicians alike; Gudrun Gut, XLR8R & The Wire to name a few. Meyer has a very personal, outward and nostalgic fingerprint, inviting you to dance and reflect at the same time.

Since the mid-nineties BJØRN SVIN has achieved status as a highly respected cult figure in Scandinavia – loved by all ages for his engaging performances and eccentric uncompromising production style..

The Copenhagen-based Norwegian producer duo SMERZ creates a melodic and captivating sound, letting feminine vocals meet heavy productions.
Smerz’s recent live performances and spreading of music has created attention and shows in the electronic music scene of Scandinavia, with gigs at Roskilde Festival, Øyafestivalen, Insomnia Festival and Way Out West among others.

Since the late 90’s OBSCURA have created video installations for concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events. Obscura have been involved with Roskilde Festival, STRØM Festival, The Royal Danish Ballet and lots of different artists.

Since 2014 the KUBE spectacle has visited venues and festivals like SPOT (DK), CLICK (DK), DISTORTION (DK), SÖDRA TEATERN (SE), GRIMFEST (DK), RADAR (DK), PITSTOP (DK), PALETTEN (DK), SONIC COLLEGE (DK) and many more places.
